A2M is a large plasma protein found in the blood and is produced by the liver. It is a major component of the alpha-2 band in protein electrophoresis. Levels are increased in nephrotic syndrome, a condition wherein the kidneys start to leak out some of the smaller blood proteins.
Alpha-2-macroglobulin is a protease inhibitor and cytokine transporter, inhibiting many proteases, including trypsin, thrombin and collagenase, and is implicated in Alzheimer disease (AD) due to its ability to mediate the clearance and degradation of A-beta, the major component of beta-amyloid deposits.
